EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) is one of the most widely used insulation materials in the world. It is lightweight, has excellent insulation properties and is widely used in sandwich panels for walls and ceilings. But what about the fire behaviour of EPS? And how does EPS fit within the circular economy? In this article we answer these questions.
Fire behaviour of EPS
One of the most frequently asked questions about EPS panels is: how does EPS behave in a fire? Standard EPS is combustible, but Unisol exclusively uses EPS-SE (Self-Extinguishing). This is a special variant of EPS that is self-extinguishing: when the ignition source is removed, the material extinguishes itself.
Properties of EPS-SE
- Self-extinguishing: the material does not continue to burn when the ignition source is removed
- Fire class E or better according to EN 13501-1
- Suitable for applications in construction where standard fire requirements apply
- Less fire risk than standard EPS
When is another core material needed?
For applications with higher fire safety requirements, such as public buildings or areas where fire spread must be strictly limited, PIR or stone wool is often prescribed. These materials have better fire resistance. Unisol can advise you on the right choice for your project.

EPS and the circular economy
The circular economy is gaining increasing attention in the construction sector. The goal: a construction and demolition process with as little waste as possible and maximum reuse of materials. How does EPS fit into this?
EPS is fully recyclable
EPS can be fully recycled. After demolition of a building, EPS panels can be processed into new EPS granulate. This granulate can then be used for new insulation products. The recycling rate of EPS in the Netherlands is already high and is still increasing.
Long lifespan
The most sustainable material is the material that lasts the longest. EPS sandwich panels have a very long lifespan — with proper maintenance, panels can last 30 to 50 years. During this period, the excellent insulation properties contribute to energy savings in the building.
Low weight means lower transport emissions
EPS is very lightweight. This means that more material can be transported per trip, resulting in lower CO2 emissions per m² of insulation material. The lightweight panels are also easier and faster to install, which also saves energy during the construction phase.
