Sandwich panels are composite building panels consisting of two steel outer skins with an insulating core in between. How are sandwich panels constructed?
A sandwich panel consists of three main components:
- Two steel outer skins – these provide strength and determine the appearance of the panel. The skins can be supplied with various coatings and in different colours.
- An insulating core – this is the heart of the panel. The core material determines the insulation value, fire behaviour and other properties. We use EPS, PIR or stone wool as core materials.
- Adhesive – the layers are bonded together under pressure to form a strong, rigid whole.
What types of sandwich panels are there?
Sandwich panels are available in different versions, each with their own characteristics:
EPS sandwich panels
EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) panels are lightweight and offer good insulation properties. They are widely used for walls and ceilings in warehouses, cold stores and industrial buildings. Unisol uses EPS-SE, a self-extinguishing variant that meets fire safety requirements.
PIR sandwich panels
PIR (Polyisocyanurate) panels offer superior insulation values with a thinner panel thickness. They are particularly suitable for applications where high insulation requirements apply, such as cold stores and freezer rooms. PIR panels also have good fire resistance.
Stone wool sandwich panels
Stone wool panels offer the best fire resistance and are used where fire safety is paramount. These panels are also sound-absorbing, making them ideal for partition walls in production environments.
