EPS Fire Safety
EPS-SE: the fire-safe solution for panel projects

EPS and fire safety
When working with fire-sensitive materials, minimizing the risk of damage is essential. That is why safety remains our highest priority for both our people and our projects. The selection of the right building materials is a critical factor in achieving this. Our EPS SE panels are specifically designed to provide a reliable and effective solution.
For construction projects and storage facilities, we have relied for many years on our EPS insulated panels featuring fire-safe SE quality up to Class 1 (or 2), tested in accordance with NEN 6065 standards. This enables us to deliver robust and durable building solutions while maintaining a strong focus on fire safety.
EPS-SE: fire class B-s1,d0
//= $section['content'] ?>Unisol’s EPS-SE panels achieve a fire classification of B-s1,d0, demonstrating a high level of fire performance and safety. This classification reflects the material’s limited contribution to fire growth and smoke development in the event of a fire.
- B – Very limited contribution to fire. The material is highly resistant to ignition and contributes minimally to fire propagation.
- s1 – Minimal smoke production, supporting safer conditions during evacuation and firefighting operations.
- d0 – No flaming droplets or particles are produced during combustion.
When properly installed and processed, EPS-SE does not contribute to the initiation or spread of fire within buildings, making it a reliable solution for fire-conscious construction applications.
What SE means
The abbreviation “SE” stands for self-extinguishing, indicating that the material has been specifically engineered with flame-retardant properties to enhance fire safety performance.
The flame-retardant additive used in EPS-SE is recognized by the Dutch Ministry of VROM and is fully integrated into the molecular structure of the EPS material. Independent research has demonstrated that these flame-retardant properties remain stable and effective, even after processing and application.
As a result, EPS-SE makes a valuable contribution to fire-safe construction solutions. In addition, the material exhibits negligible water solubility and does not release or leach substances over time, supporting both long-term performance and environmental reliability.
SE misconceptions
Misconceptions often arise regarding smoke generation and the toxicity of EPS-SE in fire situations. It is important to distinguish EPS-SE panels from standard non-flame-retardant EPS materials, such as packaging products, as their fire behaviour differs significantly.
When exposed to heat or flame, EPS-SE retracts from the heat source, thereby substantially reducing the likelihood of ignition. In addition, the integrated flame-retardant properties enable the material to self-extinguish once the external heat source is removed. These characteristics contribute to the enhanced fire performance and safety profile of EPS-SE in construction applications.
More advantages of EPS
EPS insulated panels offer several key advantages, including consistent thermal performance, robust structural strength, and the ability to span large distances without compromise.
As a sustainable and fully recyclable solution, EPS panels deliver reliable performance and proven value across a wide range of construction projects.
